ENG 2D1- Unit 17: Prison Time and Death Sentence in Canada

Luka Rocco Magnotta is becoming a household named to those world wide, but particularly in Canada. Luka Magnotta has recently been captured and arrested for the dismemberment of Jun Lin, a 33 year old Concordia University student from China, as well as mailing body parts to the Conservative and Liberal parties of Canada. While doing a bit of research and listening to constant news reports about the case, I couldn't help but wonder what would happen to Luka Magnotta. If this were in the United States, for example, I'm sure he would either receive life in prison or a death sentence. However, the life sentence in Canada is only 25 years while in other countries it is literally the rest of the persons life. Is this fair? Should Canada's legal system be more harsh with punishments? Luka Magnotta is 29 years old, presuming he is tried and sentenced to life in prison before he is 30, he would be out of jail a free man at the age of 54. Now, that can't be fair. Jun Lin was murdered in such a brutal way, and his death recorded and publicized. Luka Magnotta not only took away Jun Lin's life, but also swiped him of various human rights. I'd like to think that an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind, but in such a case like this I feel justice in not being served. Luka Magnotta should be getting at least the rest of his life in prison, if not a death sentence. I'd like to reference a case from 2005. Scott Peterson was convicted of murdering his wife, Laci, and unborn son, Conner, and tossing them into the San Francisco Bay on Christmas Eve of 2002. Scott Peterson was sentenced to death in March of 2005. He is now awaiting a death via lethal injection. Both cases involve brutal murders, I think the Luka Magnotta case is a much worse murder though. Scott Peterson has gotten a death sentence, while the most Luka Magnotta can get is 25 years in prison. This truly is unfair. Canada's legal system, in my opinion, is not harsh enough. Now, I do not mean to knock our countries legal system but I feel that certain crimes deserve a harsher sentence. Luka Magnotta wanted attention, I do not think he ever planned on getting away with the murder. No criminal who does not want to get caught posts a video of the murder online and mails the body parts to political party offices. He never planned on getting away with it. Are you kidding me? He wanted to be famous, he is now one of Canada's most notorious murderers. The Canadian legal system allows murders like him to get away with acts that deserve a much harder punishment. No body deserves to have their life ended the way Jun Lin had his ended. His murder may be released from prison in 25 years,or less, and on the streets again. Jun Lin will never get a second chance to live, Luka Magnotta took away his right to life. Justice hasn't truly been served.

Web Deux point Oh & WhyOhYou

Uno. Emerging technology, I feel, with have a great affect on literacy. The more blogs there are, the more people will be writing and reading. Ebooks and Ereaders make it easier to get read more and get a hold of books you are interested in. Technology makes it more accessible for us to expand our knowledge. Spell check lets us see our mistakes as we type and helps us improve on our grammar and spelling errors. I accidentally just spelled "grammar" "grammer" and spell check picked that up, I might not have caught that without it. Little things like this will help us expand our knowledge, pick up on detail, and improve our literacy skills.

Deux. Web 2.0 is challenging us to "rethink ourselves" and different aspects of our lives by taking a look at technologies capabilities. Machines pick up on the things we do and technology keeps progressing. years ago people couldn't imagine the technological advances we have now, such as 3D tv's. Years from now, technology will be more advanced than most of us now can even imagine. It's so easy to communicate with those in other countries, you can send someone in China a picture of the CN Tower you took on your cell phone and they would recieve it in a matter of seconds. Web 2.0 is linking people together and its challenging us to expand our thoughts and imagination to doing more than we can do now. With the technology advancing it's hard for us to keep things to ourselves, as well. So it is also challenging us to rethink aspects of our lives that we make so public. Information will be so much more accessible and we need to rethink what we want out there and what we want to ourselves. You never know the things out there that can come back and haunt you in the future.

Through the Looking Glass- Music Video Edition~

Video Chosen: Lana Del Rey- Video Games

Initial Reaction: This video appears very vintage and old timey. I feel the video fits the song perfectly. The video makes me pay more attention to the song and the video is very fascinating. There is a lot of detail to pay attention to and I enjoy the video very much.

Analysis & Interpretation: The artist herself enjoys creating moving collages, so this video reflects the artist very much. In an interview the artist said that this video is most fitting of her. The song and video are describing a past relationship of Lana Del Rey. The video uses both conceptual and physical points of view. Conceptual view points include cultural and social while physical view points include eye level, birds eye view and worms eye view. The video also incorporates different effects giving it a very vintage look and feel. The video reflects a typical summer for teenagers. There are many ways to interpret the theme of the song, but it I feel it seems mostly to be about a woman who would do anything with the man she is with. I do not feel this is aligned with Gospel values because a relationship shouldn't be one sided and the song makes it seem as though it is mainly one sided.

Consideration of Cultural Content: The event that influenced the artist was a relationship she previously had. The video seems to be very reflective of a summer romance and a typical summer for a teenager. The artist also enjoys creating moving collages so the song and video are very depictive of her.

Expression of Aesthetic Judgement: The song is very slow and, in my opinion, the video suites the song perfectly. The video has a very 1950s/60s feel to it and that reflects the artist. The song is based on Lana pondering a previous relationship and the video, with its effects comes across as the reflection on memories. The visuals make me more fond of the song, and the song is more appealing now due to the video. I enjoy not only listening to the song but also watching the video.

Ongoing Reflection: The music video makes me more fond of the song. I had heard the song prior and liked the song but after watching the music video I've taken a greater liking to the song. Whenever listening to the song, I am always compelled to watch the music video as well because I enjoy the video quite a bit. There are a lot of details to pay attention to and I like the 1950s/60s vibe of the video.

Beauty- Is it Really in the Eye of the Beholder?

The media has one of the greatest influences on people around the world. The media puts out images of all these people with "perfect" bodies and facial features and we instantly become influenced to look like that. The media does this, so that we as consumers will buy whatever is needed to fit the mould that society has set for us. The media feeds us all these fake images and non-effective products knowing that we will hop on to the newest product. When we see these images, we want to be like the people in the images. We wants to have clear beautiful skin,  flawless hair, and amazing bodies. We start seeing ourselves negatively and want to be more like the images we see in the media. If the media used less photo editing programs and used real people and made their models look more realistic then I think the pressure to fit into societies mould would lessen. I would personally love to see the subject on the cover of a magazine not all glammed up. I do very much believe that this is a possible route for society to take, but I don't think it would happen. I think that the amount of images where the person is all dolled up could lessen but I don't think that it would altogether stop. The media and society preys on people feeling negatively about themselves and wanting to change things about themselves so that products would sell more and people would be more taken with those who do fit into societies ideal image.

In these images you can see the photo editing done to the
pictures.

To Share or Not to Share.... That is the Million Dollar Question!

File sharing has become a bigger issue since interference of SOPA and PIPA with piracy and illegal downloading. A lot of people are upset at the governments involvement with internet activity, and I can't really blame them. For years, people have been using the internet as a source for music, movies. software programs and more. A majority of people have illegally downloaded something at one point or another. File sharing isn't right, but I don't feel it is wrong either. One could say that my opinion on the issue is mixed, undecided even. Now if you look at file sharing from the point of view from the person producing the art/song/movie or whatever, then I can see the wrong in file sharing. Some people would feel that it's their own creation and others shouldn't be taking it illegally. Personally though, as long as there is some clarification that it is my creation, I wouldn't mind  the sharing of my creation. However, if I have something that is intended for personal use or if someone in general has something intended for personal use then file sharing is wrong. If something isn't meant to be spread around then I feel that it shouldn't be spread. It would be morally wrong to share someone's personal files.

Career Mashing~

Career: Digital Forensics Analyst

Description: A digital forensics analyst deals with recovering data that could potentially be used for law enforcement and military. The role of a digital forensic analyst is to recover data such as documents, photos, and e-mails from the hard-drives of computers and other data storage devices, such as an usb or flash drive, that have been deleted, damaged or manipulated. Analysts will often work with crimes pertaining to the Internet ('cyber crime') and investigate computers that may have been involved with a variation of other crimes in order to  attain evidence of illegal activity.

Education needed: You will need a bachelor of science degree specializing in digital forensics and forensic investigations. An alternative would also be to focus on the technical expertise needed for digital forensics with a degree in software engineering or computer engineering. Then proceed to add courses in forensic tools and techniques such as password cracking and cryptology

Meet John Bradley: John Bradley is the president of SiQuest and was one of the digital forensic investigators who assisted in retrieving evidence from Google, which was used in the Casey Anthony case. Bradley began his career as a police officer. He later became interested in digital forensics when he managed the forensic unit at Durham Regional Police. After leaving the police force, John Bradley created an Internet forensic software called CacheBack, which was used in the Anthony case. Bradley also used his gift for translating technical issues into understandable, compelling testimony as an expert witness at homicide trials much like the Anthony's.

TGJ 201- Texting in Social Situations

1. My thoughts on texting in social situations are that it can be very rude and inappropriate. In some situations it can be okay as long as the person is in control of their texting and aware of the people around them and the conversation that may occur. In a situation where the person is totally oblivious to the people around them especially when people are attempting to make conversation it can be rude.

2. Yes, I can find it rude sometimes. As long as the person is still participating in the conversation and isn't ignoring what I'm saying and keep zoning out of the conversation it is fine. IF the persons phone becomes a main focus instead of the conversation it can be very annoying.

Lisa's Fabulous list of Texting Etiquette!
1. When participating in a conversation, the person/people become the main focus not the phone.
2. When going into a deeper level of conversation with someone put away your phone.
3. Eye contact should be made with the person more than with your phone.
4. Unless it is an emergency, do not text when talking to people and if that is the situation you should excuse yourself.
5. If you decide to put yourself in a social situation, your attention belongs to the people around you NOT the people you are texting.
