ENG 2D1- Unit 17: Prison Time and Death Sentence in Canada

Luka Rocco Magnotta is becoming a household named to those world wide, but particularly in Canada. Luka Magnotta has recently been captured and arrested for the dismemberment of Jun Lin, a 33 year old Concordia University student from China, as well as mailing body parts to the Conservative and Liberal parties of Canada. While doing a bit of research and listening to constant news reports about the case, I couldn't help but wonder what would happen to Luka Magnotta. If this were in the United States, for example, I'm sure he would either receive life in prison or a death sentence. However, the life sentence in Canada is only 25 years while in other countries it is literally the rest of the persons life. Is this fair? Should Canada's legal system be more harsh with punishments? Luka Magnotta is 29 years old, presuming he is tried and sentenced to life in prison before he is 30, he would be out of jail a free man at the age of 54. Now, that can't be fair. Jun Lin was murdered in such a brutal way, and his death recorded and publicized. Luka Magnotta not only took away Jun Lin's life, but also swiped him of various human rights. I'd like to think that an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind, but in such a case like this I feel justice in not being served. Luka Magnotta should be getting at least the rest of his life in prison, if not a death sentence. I'd like to reference a case from 2005. Scott Peterson was convicted of murdering his wife, Laci, and unborn son, Conner, and tossing them into the San Francisco Bay on Christmas Eve of 2002. Scott Peterson was sentenced to death in March of 2005. He is now awaiting a death via lethal injection. Both cases involve brutal murders, I think the Luka Magnotta case is a much worse murder though. Scott Peterson has gotten a death sentence, while the most Luka Magnotta can get is 25 years in prison. This truly is unfair. Canada's legal system, in my opinion, is not harsh enough. Now, I do not mean to knock our countries legal system but I feel that certain crimes deserve a harsher sentence. Luka Magnotta wanted attention, I do not think he ever planned on getting away with the murder. No criminal who does not want to get caught posts a video of the murder online and mails the body parts to political party offices. He never planned on getting away with it. Are you kidding me? He wanted to be famous, he is now one of Canada's most notorious murderers. The Canadian legal system allows murders like him to get away with acts that deserve a much harder punishment. No body deserves to have their life ended the way Jun Lin had his ended. His murder may be released from prison in 25 years,or less, and on the streets again. Jun Lin will never get a second chance to live, Luka Magnotta took away his right to life. Justice hasn't truly been served.
