Through the Looking Glass- Music Video Edition~

Video Chosen: Lana Del Rey- Video Games

Initial Reaction: This video appears very vintage and old timey. I feel the video fits the song perfectly. The video makes me pay more attention to the song and the video is very fascinating. There is a lot of detail to pay attention to and I enjoy the video very much.

Analysis & Interpretation: The artist herself enjoys creating moving collages, so this video reflects the artist very much. In an interview the artist said that this video is most fitting of her. The song and video are describing a past relationship of Lana Del Rey. The video uses both conceptual and physical points of view. Conceptual view points include cultural and social while physical view points include eye level, birds eye view and worms eye view. The video also incorporates different effects giving it a very vintage look and feel. The video reflects a typical summer for teenagers. There are many ways to interpret the theme of the song, but it I feel it seems mostly to be about a woman who would do anything with the man she is with. I do not feel this is aligned with Gospel values because a relationship shouldn't be one sided and the song makes it seem as though it is mainly one sided.

Consideration of Cultural Content: The event that influenced the artist was a relationship she previously had. The video seems to be very reflective of a summer romance and a typical summer for a teenager. The artist also enjoys creating moving collages so the song and video are very depictive of her.

Expression of Aesthetic Judgement: The song is very slow and, in my opinion, the video suites the song perfectly. The video has a very 1950s/60s feel to it and that reflects the artist. The song is based on Lana pondering a previous relationship and the video, with its effects comes across as the reflection on memories. The visuals make me more fond of the song, and the song is more appealing now due to the video. I enjoy not only listening to the song but also watching the video.

Ongoing Reflection: The music video makes me more fond of the song. I had heard the song prior and liked the song but after watching the music video I've taken a greater liking to the song. Whenever listening to the song, I am always compelled to watch the music video as well because I enjoy the video quite a bit. There are a lot of details to pay attention to and I like the 1950s/60s vibe of the video.

  1. I love how different music videos attract and repel different viewers.
I, personally would not listen to this song but it's cool to know what kind of music you listen to Lisa :)

  2. I agree that the music video made the song just THAT much better. It's interesting that you noted how Lana Del Ray was influenced by both a past relationship and her liking of moving collages when making this song and music video. It is good to see that some artists still represent themselves regardless of pressure from music labels and press.
